Company Car Or Company Car Allowance – Which Should I Choose

auto3

If you have the choice of a Company Car or Company Car Allowance, you should check out how much Company Car Tax (or Benefit In Kind Tax as it is also known) that you would pay if you accept a company vehicle, and then decide whether to go for the Company Car or cash. You could be better off taking the car allowance and leasing a car yourself, even though the allowance is taxable.

The Cash for Car scheme has become increasingly popular with both employers and employees in recent years. Employers save time and money in not having to source, maintain and administer a fleet, although they must always be aware of their Duty of Care and Health & Safety responsibilities. And as an employee, you have more freedom to choose the car you drive, and you could even be better off if you dont spend all of the company car allowance you receive. However, some employers do stipulate the type and age of vehicle that is acceptable, according to the job you are doing.

If you choose to accept a Company Car Allowance, its worth considering Car Leasing vs Buying. Car Leasing (also known as Contract Hire) is simply the hiring of a vehicle for an agreed period of time for a fixed monthly rental. Unlike Short Term Rental or daily rental, a car lease is usually for 2-5 years, after which you can simply hand the car back with no further commitment or, in some case, you may be able to purchase the vehicle if you wish. Car Leasing is a convenient, cost-effective and hassle-free way of financing a new vehicle, and there are many benefits of leasing a car. It enables easy budgeting of your motoring costs, and the fixed monthly payments can even include servicing and maintenance. Also, theres no need to worry about depreciation or disposing of the vehicle at the end of the contract.

Dont forget that if you choose the company car instead of the company car allowance, all your motoring costs (except private fuel) will be taken care of by your employer including insurance, road tax, servicing and repairs. If you choose the company car allowance, you will have to pay for these things yourself.

If you choose a company car allowance and lease a vehicle which you use in the course of your job, youre entitled to claim from your employer a mileage allowance for each business mile travelled. H.M. Revenue & Customs approves certain mileage rates that employees can claim for business travel, and the current rate is 40p per mile. Check the HMRC website for the latest information.

Part way between the company car and a company car allowance is something called Employee Car Ownership. This is where your employer gives you a car allowance, but the company organizes the finance deal and takes care of insurance and running costs. This may also be worth considering if your employer offers such a scheme.

What Are Explosion Proof Motors & How Are They Used

auto14

Explosion proof motors are specially designed and manufactured versions of standard electric motors which have been produced from extra strong iron and other materials to withstand accidental explosions in the surrounding area. This enables them to be able to operate perfectly normally in hazardous environments where they may be in contact with flammable gases, combustible dusts or fibres.

The build quality of these types of electric motors is second to none using premium grade robust materials to enable them to continue to function in extreme industrial environments. The outer casing has been designed to have a high IP protection as well as being both corrosion and weather proof. With specifications like that they can be used in areas which are not accessible by the plant operations staff without them wearing protective clothing and breathing apparatus. Such areas are common place in chemical processing plants and steel production facilities.

Motor Casing Construction

The extra strength iron which is used in the manufacture of explosion proof motors ensures that they are not damaged by sudden increases or decreases in the environment surrounding them. In addition the strong casing will ensure that if any fault does occur within the motor housing which causes a fire risk that it does not escape into the surrounding area, potentially causing damage to plant machinery or the company’s workforce.

Even the electrical circuitry within the motor is securely insulated with specially designed cooling elements to further protect the motor from explosion from within. Typically this type of motor can continue to function normally in temperatures of minus 20 up to 40 centigrade.

Motor Production Regulations

With all things there are strict regulations which need to be adhered to in order to get explosion proof motors to market. Keeping to regulations and maintaining high standards are particularly important in this industry as the potential for loss of life and property is high. If a motor should malfunction or not be able to withstand an explosion then the implications for plant workers is great. Indeed most manufacturers of these kinds of motor will have a department dedicated to testing and grading explosion proof motors to ensure they pass all necessary standards. Thoroughly insulated electrical components and advanced cooling techniques are employed to provide seamless operation in a wide range of environments. These motors have been meticulously designed to protect themselves from localised explosions and as such are as strong on the outside as they are on the inside.

Energy-Efficient Electric Motors Now Built to Order by Groschopp

auto6

Electric motors and the new, modern energy-efficient motors are a far cry from the items one would have found back in the early years of the nineteenth century, emerging from the experimental workshop of Michael Faraday in 1821. The experimental setup he invented proved that the application of an electrical current through a magnet created a field which induced linear movement. However, it was not until ten years later that the practical application of an electric motor capable of turning machinery was invented and demonstrated by the British scientist William Sturgeon. .

The motors were expensive to manufacture and also expensive to repair, because of the components. It was not until about 1855 that practical, affordable, and reliable electric motors first appeared on the scene. The forerunner of all modern energy efficient motors and electrical motors in general was invented around 1873 by Znobe Gramme. The “Gramme Machine” was the first electric motor that was an efficient power source for diverse types of machinery. The story goes that the motor was invented purely by accident. Sometimes, the great breakthroughs in science and engineering through the ages has been a combination of luck and accidental discovery.

Practical electric motor design and manufacturing has revolutionized society as a whole, especially with the introduction of fractional horsepower motors (FHP), which are electric motor units with a power-rated output of 746 watts or less. The consumer-led boom, immediately following World War 2, led to the rise in these types of electrical motors which are the mainstay of washing machines, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, and other domestic and commercial applications and appliances.

Modern vehicles would be incomplete without FHP units: adjustable seats, windscreen wipers, central locking systems, electric-operated sun roofs and convertible roofs. In fact, some thirty-five percent of all FHP motors is used in the manufacture and assembly of cars, trucks, buses and other vehicle types. Without modern efficient electric motor design and manufacture, the industrial and residential landscape we are used to would be completely different than it is now.

Groschopp is a trusted and respected manufacturer of highly engineered fractional horsepower electric motors and gear motors for OEM and distribution products. For more information about electric motors, contact details, and other types of motors, log on to the website today at

Buying A Second Hand Car In Zambia

auto6

So, you are thinking of buying a second hand / used car in Zambia, but you do not know where to start, what to look out for, and how much you should spend on what. Remember, to find that perfect second hand / used car you need to have patience and some knowledge- it will take effort to source a good second hand car in Zambia and you will need to restrain yourself until you find the right car at the right price.

Never rush into buying a used car in Zambia. This part is where the patience comes in! You need to start with a list of cars you would like and then start finding car sales and used car dealers across Zambia. Make sure to not only look for a used car dealer in the city you will be residing, but also look in other major cities like Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe- in the end you must be sure that you know exactly what the Zambian car market has to offer.

Now, the question is where will you start looking for a used car in Zambia? If you’ve already checked the major car dealerships, the next step would be to take a look at the local newspapers like the Times of Zambia, Post Newspaper Zambia and the Daily Mail(specifically the classified sections) and surf the Internet for used cars by just going to one of the major search engines and typing in “car sales Zambia”, “used cars Zambia” or “second hand cars Zambia”. You can also contact local auction houses who are selling bank repossessed cars.

Some newspapers or publications we recommend include the Times of Zambia look out for the Post Newspaper Zambia. The Times of Zambia in Lusaka or the Goleka.com, which is also available online, will have plenty of cars to choose from. The Post Newspaper Zambia have a pull out weekly called Sangwapo all have sections where you can look for second hand cars and used car sales.

As the new owner of a used car you should enquire as to the costs for repairs and availability of spare parts. This will all give you an idea as to what the first service will put you back. Foreigners also need to apply for a Traffic register number before being able to register or licence their new car. For this you will need two colour passport size photographs and a copy of your Passport.

Always remember that when you are buying a used car you should read through the sales documentation carefully. In most cases the car is bought or sold without any warranty at all and in the condition as is.

This in effect means that you have to buy the right car. Buying a cheap car that isn’t in a good condition and will break in 3 months just is not worth the time and hassle.

Cool 250cc Motor Scooters

auto17

You’ve wanted one and now is the time. You need some cheap wheels because you are sick of paying $50 every time you go to the gas station to fill up your car. Well, scooters are a great alternative, especially the 250cc scooter. The great thing about these is that they can pretty much go as fast as a motorcycle, yet they are a lot easier to handle. It takes the intimidation factor away immediately.

Here are some of the most popular 250cc scooters out there:

Honda
Though they are one of the most popular scooter makers, they do not have one in this class. You would have to go with the small SH150i or the much larger 600cc Silver Wing.

Kymco
The GrandVista 250 has a 4 stroke engine and you can expect to pay in the mid $4000 range. The one thing this model does not feature that others do is fuel injection.

Vespa
The GTS 250 is the more affordable version ($6000) and the GVT 250 is the high end model ($7000+) because of its old school looks. Both feature a 4 stroke, liquid cooled engine with electronic fuel injection.

United Motors
At just over $2000, the Expressway 250 comes at the most affordable option in this category. It still has a 4 stroke liquid cooled engine, so if you are on a tight budget make sure you take a long hard look at the Expressway. It has great value and power for the money.

Cheetah
The Cheetah Touring 250 is a very popular model that comes in at around the $3000 mark. Not bad for this size scooter. No fuel injection, but it can still move pretty fast.

Yamaha
Yamaha has a one called the Roketa MC-54-250, not exactly the best name, but a good set of wheels nonetheless. They say it tops out at 85 mph and is priced around $2000.

What else is fun to drive, can go 80 mph, and get 80 mpg? I’ll tell you right now that there is no car that can. So if you are in the market for a new vehicle, take a quick look at the 250cc scooter market. They may give you the affordability and efficiency you are looking for.

How To Buy A Properly Sized Motorcycle Helmet

auto11

Before you start your search for a motorcycle helmet, or take the next step towards buying a helmet, you should be aware of how motorcycle helmets are meant to fit. When buying a helmet, how do you know that it fits correctly? Buying a helmet that offers maximum protection requires you to have an understanding of the proper sizing and fit. For both safety and comfort, it is essential that you wear a proper fitting motorcycle helmet. Many new riders end up buying a helmet that is too large. While this may be comfortable, it may not be tight enough to remain on your head during a crash, and will therefore provide less protection than a properly fitted motorcycle helmet.

Most helmet manufacturers have size charts to assist you in choosing the appropriate size. Most helmets come in small, medium, large, and extra-large. Keep in mind that not all helmets are made the same; sizes often vary between manufacturers. Before buying a helmet, you’ll need to have an idea of your approximate size. Measuring the head is a good starting point for determining your correct motorcycle helmet size. Measure around your head at a point about an inch above the eyebrows, which will result in the largest possible circumference. Hat size can be another rough starting point for determining your motorcycle helmet size.

When buying a helmet, always be sure to try it on, either at the store or when it arrives in the mail. When trying on a full face motorcycle helmet, make sure that the helmet rests just above your browline. Try to fit your thumb between the helmet and your forehead. The helmet should rest so closely against your forehead that there is no room left to fit a finger. Conversely, if you feel like the helmet will leave red marks on your skin or it’s so tight that it is uncomfortable to get onto your head, it may be too small. Make sure that it does not obstruct your field of vision. Shake your head to check that the helmet feels secure, not too loose, on your head. If you wear prescription glasses, make sure that you’ll be able to wear them comfortably with the helmet.

If you are a woman, it is also crucial to understand the differences between men’s and women’s helmets. Although these differences are subtle, and you may even not notice any stylistic differences, buying a helmet that fits you correctly is crucial if you want for maximum protection while riding. If you accidentally end up buying a helmet designed for men, it will not fit as well as a helmet designed for women. In addition to potential design variations, most women’s motorcycle helmets are slightly smaller than the same size in men’s motorcycle helmets.
